Breaking News: LOVE WINS! Marriage Equality Comes to Taiwan & US House Passes the Equality Act
BREAKING NEWS: Friday, May 17, 2019
TAIWAN – The Taiwanese Parliament in a vote of 66 to 27 passed Marriage Equality, making Taiwan the FIRST Asian country to win this historic landmark. Taiwan’s LGBTQIA community won a landmark court case in 2017 when the court ruled that same-sex couples had the constitutional right to marry. The court gave the Taiwan’s government until May 24, 2019 to extend these rights. There were three competing bills to achieve this requirement.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen requested that lawmakers to support the only bill that referred to same-sex partnerships as “marriage” and offered limited adoption rights and this is the bill that passed. The bill will take effect when President Ing-wen passes it into law. The other two bills were put forward by conservative lawmakers and referred to marriage equality as “same-sex family relationships” or “same-sex unions” and offered no adoption rights.
WASHINGTON, DC – In a HISTORIC VOTE of 236-173 vote, the US House has voted to pass the Equality Act, a bill that would add LGBTQIA protections to the Civil Rights Act and close the RFRA loophole that allows religion to be used as a weapon to discriminate. The Equality Act is an essential bill that spotlights the pervasive, unjust, and unacceptable discrimination facing our community. It is necessary legislation. The Equality Act now moves to the US Senate where it’s future is less certain.

As the LGBT Caucus has shown since 2013 (i.e. passing the transgender birth certificate law, banning conversion therapy & our 2019 Legislative Bills we will be supporting) we all still so have so much more left to do to ensure justice and equality is a reality for everyone. So we hope that you will think about making a donation to the LGBT Caucus so that we have the resources for the battles ahead.
Mahalo nui loa!
